"Brilliant day produced by a professional, enthusiastic and passionate photographer. Damien was patient and helpful throughout the day and I have ended up with some great photos. The small team of 5 was ideal for the shoot and it was great to associate with such a nice group."

About Damien, your tutor
I’ve spent over 40 years working behind the camera, including time as a cameraman and lighting director with the BBC. My approach is simple: understand the light, simplify the scene, and create fabulous images.

You don’t necessarily need more gear. What most photographers are missing is the ability to see or create great light. This one-day workshop is about changing that.
We’ll spend the day shooting in Bristol, working with experienced model Carla Monaco, and focusing on how to create strong, deliberate portraits in real locations.
I’ll show you exactly how I approach a scene, how I find the light - or create it, and direct the shot.
We'll work with available light or one Godox AD200pro off camera flash. I'll provide the flash, modifiers, stand and dedicated triggers.
Location: Bristol, UK. Meet at Millenium Square. Details to follow.
Dates: 12 May or 20 May
Time: 09:30 - 17:00
Number of participants: Limited to 5 places per workshop
Price: £375 / €430 / US $507
You’ll be working with experienced model Carla Monaco, who brings energy, confidence, and just the right amount of attitude to the shoot. Carla and I have shot together since 2013 and we've had a lot of fun along the way.
"I love Damien’s work, so to get the opportunity to spend a day in Bristol experiencing his knowledge was a dream. A brilliant day, took me out of my comfort zone and I came away with new ideas for urban photography. Would definitely recommend a day with Damien and would do it again if the opportunity arises. Definitely 5*"
"An absolutely outstanding day spent with Damien and model Veronique on Urban Portraits. The shoot was not rushed and every one of our small group was given ample time to get their shots in the bag. Damien’s style of teaching is second to none, and his ability to impart knowledge in a totally relaxed manner means that you walk away, with a great understanding of what you’ve learned. Some of my long-standing lighting “theories” were turned on their head, and the quality of the resulting images was just stunning. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who has a genuine desire to take their outdoor portraits to the next level, you will be delighted with what you can achieve."
We start at 09:30 in a waterfront café, (I'll email a map and full details). Coffee, introductions, and a gentle technical briefing. Then we head out into the city. We will work within a 1km radius all day. We won't cover much ground, but we will be on our feet for extended periods.
I’ll show you how I approach each location, what I’m looking for, how I shape the light, and how I direct the shot. Then it's over to you. You’ll shoot, I’ll guide, and we’ll build images step-by-step.
When we are using flash, you'll be shooting one at a time and I'll use the time to give feedback on your images and suggest improvements. We won't move on to the next set up until everyone has their shots.
We'll stop for a mid morning break, have lunch at Prezzo Italian restaurant. and have a mid afternoon break on the waterfront. All included in the price.
We'll finish around 17:00 with a debrief in a nearby bar.
This course is suited to intermediate and advanced photographers, but ambitious beginners will also benefit if they already understand basic camera controls and are comfortable working in manual mode.
